WHAT IS RADIOATHON?
Radioathon is a semi annual event that takes place on the airwaves of WBLD-FM. The radio station stays "live on the air" for 24 hours taking pledges for a charitable organization. All proceeds go directly to the charity of choice. We have done radioathons for the Michigan Humane Society, The Pontiac Rescue Mission, Juvenile Diabetes and Our Children's Fund. WBLD has raised almost $10,000 over the years for these worthy causes.
The first Radioathon was held in 1995 and was the brainchild of WBLD alums Dave Greenhut and Stacy Gastwirth, who organized the very first event. Originally, Radio-a-thon went from 6:00pm Friday evening until 6:00 Sunday evening. Since then, the event has been streamlined and currently runs from 2:00pm Friday until 2:00pm Saturday. Featured during the radioathon have been special guests, celebrities, tons of great prizes and surprises and a lot more!
Best of all, during the Noon to 2pm shift, WBLD has an alumni reunion. At the last Radioathon in November of 2003, more than a dozen familiar faces, some who graduated as long ago as 1990, showed up for the WBLD alumni shift.
here's the alumni that showed up for the 2003 radioathon.
Also, Station Manager Paul Townley has an ongoing challenge to the community: he will shave his head for a 100 dollar pledge. In 2003 he started the challenge and the community responded with not one but TWO $100 dollar pledges! So, during the alumni shift, Mr. Townley's wife gleefully made him pay up:
All in all, it's a great time and we will keep you posted on the details for the upcoming RADIOATHON 2006. It promises to be the BEST EVER!
